Calling all Potter geeks!

What do you guys think Pottermore is?

ETA (Before I even posted this, fail, heh): There's a website here that might be it (HPANA explains. Sort of.) But  I hope it's not just a website...

I WISH it was the encyclopedia, but because it said it wasn't a book ... I don't know. Maybe a MMORPG? That seems to be a popular theory over at Leaky. I hope not, because I don't play those. What do you think it is?

[identity profile] author-by-night.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, true, but it could be that they meant it wasn't a new Harry Potter series book. :P I realize that's probably a stretch, though.

A friend of mine suggested it was a virtual book of sorts - or rather, has information that the book would have. Or it's a combination, with hints at a or point-blank promotes future book but for now just tidbits on the site.

I suppose it could be a MMPORG, but somehow that doesn't sound like something JKR would come up with. I guess you never know, though.

Hmm. A virtual book of the encyclopedia sounds too close to the HP Lexicon ... and I don't think she'd go THERE. :P

I really hope it's not a game. Or a HP social networking site (which is another theory I've seen). I think that ship has sailed. Short stories online would be good ...

I really hope it's not a social networking site too...although that's what some rumors seem to be pointing to. That would have been really popular maybe 6 years ago, but now...not so much, I don't think.

The thing is, fandom's already done the whole social networking thing. I daresay HP fandom had a role in social networking becoming what it is - I'm not saying we invented it or anything, but while other people used the internet for the very basic stuff, we used LJ and other blogging tools, we used forums, and we used instant messaging. After calling us nerds and bums, people caught on. So while a social networking site could very well be it, I don't see the point in that.

Exactly. And now that the books AND the movies are done, I think the community will wander off to other things.

I'm trying my best to not get excited because it just feels like setting myself up for disappointment. Jo has never disappoiinted me, so there's really no precedent for that, but Mugglenet sort of set up expectations that can't be met, didn't it? They said it would be "equally exciting" as a new book. I'm not that thrilled with any sort of social networking idea, and as much as an MMORPG would be great (though I really can't see that being it), it's still not a book. An online encyclopedia would be fantastic, but again, I'd prefer a print one.

As I said on tumblr, the only way this could be equally exciting as a new book would be if Jo announced that the Wizarding World is actually real and that all of our Hogwarts owls are just slightly late.

That's the thing. And honestly, HP stuff has disappointed me before - look at the 800 word prequel. I thought it was going to be this really cool insight into the series when really it was a random moment. A fun random moment to read about, but random all the same. And I've always gotten myself excited about interviews, only that they're often disappointing - even fan interviews. I think there's exactly three interviews JK Rowling ever did (including the one with Memerson after HBP) that I felt was worth taking the time to read.

I definitely think people will be disappointed no matter what. I do hope this doesn't turn out to be something small, but it very well could. Or it'll be something that doesn't interest me. There's rumors it's some social networking thing, which to me sounds pointless because fandom's already kinda done that on its own.

World Book Day was the second, and the post-DH chat was the third, amirite?

(Oprah's interview was particularly rank. It consisted pretty much entirely of "is it true you came up with the idea on a train" questions; I think she was just trying to plug her channel to one of the bigger groups of people that doesn't usually watch her show but might be swayed to do so.)

Oh, how I would love that. :)

The Wizarding World being real, that is. :P

I'm totally confused as to what this could be. I was thinking an online encyclopedia or something, but then people argued that she wanted to release it in book form, so... Honestly, I'm just sitting back and waiting to see :P

The released e-books of the complete Harry Potter books.

An interactive school yearbook of the Marauder's era, with little biographies and tidbits on every character. Or the current era.

The long-hidden away first draft of book seven, which was going to feature a compelling and dramatically different plot, before a leak/a copyright lawsuit/a fan's speculation that hit too close to the mark forced her to rewrite from scratch, forever regretting the first draft hidden from the sunlight forever.

A recipe for butterbeer to make at home.

A list of the 10 fanfictions that JKR has read and deemed worthy to receive her honors; not quite on the level of canon, but she will approve of them nonetheless.

... The article I read on the subject was leaning heavily towards ebooks. That's where my money is. If I was going to put any money on this.

The only thing I'd consider exiting, or even interesting, would be the erelease of The Scottish Book.

Of course, Jo announcing she was starting a new serirs, but this time she would use Betas and editors, would be pretty good news as well.
