At least according to the trending news on Facebook. When I watched it at eleven, Sabrina looked so mature. Now, in the picture they're showing, she looks so young. Of course, sixteen is to me now what seven year olds were to me at eleven.

So, random Sabrina thoughts:

Did any of you watch Sabrina? Do you still?

I've been rewatching Communty. Some observations:

What is something you've seen or read that worked for the plot, but would be perceived as dangerous, obnoxious or even evil in the real world? Did it work for you because it was fiction, or did it still bother you?

(Let's assume the characters doing said thing were supposed to be at least marginally likable.)

Example: Joey causes a two hour traffic delay while proposing to his girlfriend in the middle of an intersection. (Actually, this happened IRL.) We see two ambulances being among the stuck vehicles.

So I've been watching Girl Meets World, which is basically a sequel series to Boy Meets World. It veers a little close for comfort at first towards being a "next gen fanfic" (where everyone's basically a xerox copy of their parents), but fortunately it avoids it, and even Maya, who is a bit of a Shawn expy, is very much her own person. I'm not watching the show faithfully, just a few episodes I've heard were good, but it's fun nonetheless.

Here's my question, though - what series did you grow up with do you think could have a plausible continuation, either a "next gen" thing or even the characters as being older? OR, what other series have done this that you enjoy? Spiritual successors don't really count, unless you want to argue that they could very well be in the same universe (that would be interesting, so let's hear it).

Phobias may be memories passed down in genes

Personally? I buy it, and a NOVA feature also suggested nightmares could be genetic as well. According to the study, when children have bad dreams, they usually involve animals; as they grow up, they end up being more along the lines of "modern' problems. I know I used to have dreams about dogs chasing me, even though I never had any remote fear of dogs. (Although the NOVA feature didn't suggest they were memories so much as primal "warnings", a way to sort of help prepare us for what could happen.)

I can't believe I'm typing up a Harry Potter post again, for the first time in years, but a discussion on fandomsecrets (... of all the places) has inspired. There was some discussion on themes in her books that appeared to completely contradict the message she was trying to get across, such as the Houses or the Dementors. In this post, I'm trying to do a careful examination of those so-called problem areas.Something WTF This Way Comes )

A situation we've all been in. Exaggerating mostly to make this universal. :P

Person A: Oh, Star Wars? I LOVE Star Wars!

Person B: Another Star Wars fan! So blather blather, mcblatherson, Han Solo -

Person A: Wait, Han who?

Person B: Han Solo.

Person A: I have no idea who that is, I haven't seen Star Wars since I was five. I know Darth Vader's Luca Moonrunner's uncle, though!

I miss meta/discussion, so I'm calling for it here.

Any fandom, any pairing, any whatever: Go. Confess your unpopular fandom opinions. Talk crack theories. Talk general theories. Discuss the worst fic you ever wrote. Talk about the fic you wrote that was on Geocities and you can't access anymore because, well, Geocities.. Talk about whether or not your "closed fandom" should have a sequel/prequel series. Anything goes.

I'm making this public and allowing anonymous comments - with the understanding that this isn't to be a hate meme or anything like that. Also, talk ships if you'd like, but no ship wars in the comments. Please. Being in the Harry Potter fandom made me a bit intolerant of them.

Me: Oh! Did I tell you I saw two of the original Star Trek episodes today?
[livejournal.com profile] arianablack : hehe
Me:: The "suspense" music was kind of corny. I know it was from the 60s, but still
[livejournal.com profile] arianablack : Well, with all the drugs, I'm sure it made sense at the time

Just wanted to post that since I thought some of you would find that amusing. But, yes, I found Star Trek online, on either NBC or CBS, I forget which website. It's neat exploring one of the first widespread fanbases. (I don't count having seen the most recent adaptation, just because... it felt like a very 2009 adaptation, if that makes any sense whatsoever.)

I still say the music that they played every time something worthy of concern or suspense was a bit cheesy. :P And the first episode annoyed me because it was almost too obvious. I'm not really hooked, but I'm intrigued. I watched another episode that was later in the season, and it was quite good. I think it's also a bit hard to swallow because while it takes place in the future, you have all these 1960s outfits and hairdos. Then again, in Firefly they all talk like they're in 1849. (And, in some cases - see Shindig - 1809). So I've decided for whatever reason, 60s style came back.

Anyway, that's your meta for the night.

ETA: One more thing... George Taikei! :D Now I get why he has so many fangirls. I only knew him before from Heroes, where he played Hiro's father. I'd known he had something to do with Star Trek, but I didn't realize he was Sulu.

So I've been thinking about how I feel about most of Jo's chats/interviews/appearances being catered for her eight year old fans, when IMO there's no way they actually understood TDH.

And wondering how reasonable it is.

I've devised a list of crack theories for book seven - that is, theories that I feel are highly implausible, some even quite humorous, but they won't go away until I write them down.

ETA: After writing this, I'm not sure "crack theories" is the right term, but they're still not ones I think are remotely canon.
