So I want to say up front that this isn't an "anti-" anything anyone else has done or any community has done. It's just my own take on a questions meme/blog prompts.

A lot of memes (fandom or not) ask pretty casual questions. Which are great for many people, but sometimes more in-depth questions are preferred. The object of this meme is to compile questions that are little deeper OR sillier. Obviously everyone's idea of deeper or interesting is going to be different, so no pressure. I want a mix. Ultimately, my goal is questions that lend themselves to conversation, as opposed to more brief answers. You can ask questions about fandom, opinions on various topics, life experiences, serious stuff, spiritual stuff, funny stuff, anything you like. Just try going for questions that lend themselves to more in-depth posts.

I figure I'll accept questions over the next month or so, depending on how many I get. Ask however many you want. Making it public so anyone can contribute!

In your own space, introduce yourself! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I don't talk too much about myself in public spaces - I could've flocked this, but then I wouldn't have been able to share it with other Snowflake participants, and that defeats the whole purpose! I will say that I am a woman in my thirties who lives in the US.

I've been involved in internet fandoms for almost 20 years now, although really, I've always been a very fannish person. I'm also a writer with a vivid imagination, which must play into it.

I decided to do a bit of a fannish twist on an intro, since this is a fannish challenge. Basically, I'm going to list a few books/shows and name characters I am most like. Behind a cut since I know fannish stuff isn't everyone's thing.

Looking forward to seeing everyone else's responses, and hoping to meet some new people! Welcome!

I forgot I was doing this! (ETA: I know, the cut's not working but my internet's also being wonky because we have wind. Trying to fix it as we speak. I hate dreamwidth's forking cut thing.) ETA 2: Works on LJ, wonky here. If it's easier, just go to LJ

The idea is to create a miniseries concept, complete with a cast of characters.  Today's idea is a series based on Harry Potter, except it would be about the Hogwarts Founders. Read more... )
are the descendants of Cain. Salazar believes this to be incredibly flawed logic, but he cannot forget what led his parents to this sect, and believes Non-Wizards (the term "Muggle" not being in use yet) aren't be trusted. Nor are magical children born to them...

Eoforhild: Lena Headey

Salazar's wife; wants to rule over the women, despite not being one of the Hogwarts Heads. Her only true friend among
the women is Helga, who doesn't let herself get walked on, but recognizes Eoforhild's deep-set loneliness.

Rowena, Wife of Ravenclaw:
Kelly MacDonald

Rowena is married to Ravenclaw, who is originally commissioned to help build the school. However, it quickly becomes clear that Rowena is the true genius, as she quickly designs the entire castle. Rowena takes pride in her creative work; however, she soon realizes that her husband might never forgive her.

Ravenclaw:
Rory McCann

Ravenclaw was given the name to him by his Saxon mother for reasons he never understood.  Although Ravenclaw loves his wife, he considers her insistence on taking the helm a betrayal - and begins to consider her something of a braggart.

Helena, Daughter of Ravenclaw: Isabelle Allen

Helena is the eldest daughter of Ravenclaw. Although initially pleasant (if always temperamental), she feels that her mother is
the driving force behind her father's growing discontent and eventual departure. She is also envious of her mother's quick thinking - and the
diadem she has never been allowed to wear.

Artair, son of Ravenclaw:
August Maturo

Artair has his head in the clouds, unfazed by the arguing going on in his family. His goal is to try befriending
the Centaurs who live nearby, less for diplomatic purposes and more because he's fascinated with creatures and beings.

Balvard the Baron: Daniel Huttlestone

Balvard might be orphaned, but money and status have kept him well. He is used to getting what he wants -
and what he wants is one Helena, daughter of Ravenclaw.

Helga of Hufflepuff:
Kimberly Nixon

A Welsh-Dane witch, Helga calls for diplomatic relations between the Centaurs and the witches and wizards
of Hogsmeade. She also warns against Houses, believing that the concept is unjust and could, in fact,
"wreak havoc felt a thousand years later!"  Helga is also well aware of the affection Fionn feels towards her, and returns
his feelings... with hesitation.

Fionn: Tony Curran

Fionn is appointed the Keeper of the Keys, but longs for something greater than arguing
with Centaurs and breeding Thestrals. Will he find that something more in Helga?

Hrognoth: Russell Tovey

The Smith of Hogwarts, Hrognoth has deep feelings towards Helga. But he's quite dreadful at
making them clear to her...

;

Mimsy the Younger: John Cleese

Mimsy is a nonwizard-born knight who is instrumental to the security measures at Hogwarts. He
sees Godric as something of a protégé, but worries that the man's rashness might also be his
undoing.

Pan: Aidan Turner

(I mean, of course Aidan Turner plays a Centaur.)

Pan is the leader of the Centaurs, and not at all happy with the building of a castle so
close to his forest. But will efforts to protect his herd go too far?

I envision this as taking place 5-6 seasons. Perhaps with time jumps.

Assorted plot points (expanding on what has been said above):

- Hogwarts is founded.

- Negotiations with Centaurs are discussed; the Founders differ on how to handle it. Helga, Bronwyn, Eoforhild and Salazar (believe it or not) feel that more compromise must be made. Godric, Rowena, and Ravenclaw see them as being upset over losing land they were not even occupying (which has some truth) and that enough compromise has been made, given that they have the forest. Mimsy initially agrees with the latter, but begins to see the former's points. Fionn is of two minds... until he begins to see the Centaurs as hurdles, regardless.

- Ravenclaw grows increasingly jealous of Rowena, and attempts to undermine her. The only one who falls for it is Helena, who adores her father and wants to please him. Ravenclaw eventually leaves, claiming that there is trouble at home (but everyone knows this isn't true). Rowena is heartbroken; Helena blames her mother.

- Balvard's obsession with Helena is also wearing on her. She refers to him as "that bloody baron" - to his face, no less.

- Salazar, meanwhile, begins to grow more and more suspicious of letting in children of non-wizards. He believes that at the very least, strict measures must be taken. A chamber, perhaps, with a creature that will attack anyone who might betray
them...

- But that's not all that occupies him. Weary of her daughter hating her and her husband's absence, Rowena begins to take comfort in Salazar, realizing that she is in love with him. She confesses this to Helga, claiming that Salazar's wife doesn't love him and that "adultery, under certain circumstances, is hardly the worst sin." Helga puts her to shame, and they go several episodes without speaking a word to each other.

- Fionn, tired of sparring with Pan, kills him in a fit of rage. (Sorry, Aidan Turner.) This sets off a conflict that almost ruins Hogwarts, and causes even more tension. Salazar and Godric argue more, Salazar goes deeper into dark things even Eoforhild has trouble reconciling, and Helga tells Fionn she no longer loves him. How can she?

A battle sees the deaths of Mimsy and Fionn, and an irreparable argument between Salazar and the other Founders. This would be a season finale, perhaps the second.

- The third season begins with the birth of Godric's  first child. But he is more focused on trying to repair relations between
the wizards and witches of Hogwarts and the Centaurs - something Bronwyn points out should have been his goal from the beginning. He knows that the future of his school is uncertain, and puts responsibility on himself. Helga, meanwhile, is devastated and confused, mourning a man she wishes she didn't still love.

Meanwhile, Helena - now sixteen -  is growing wearier and wearier of Balvard's advances. She also feels substantially less gifted than her mother. One night she finds the Diadem, and steals it. She leaves a note on her mother's pillow saying that she is done being a mere daughter. Rowena is understandably devastated.

- Adding to her devastation is the departure of Salazar. This shakes the whole group; everyone blames themselves, but especially Godric and Balvard, the latter of whom believed himself to be something of a protégé. Eoforhild says tearful goodbyes, and tells Rowena that she never really hated her - but rather, greatly envied her.

Rowena later tells Godric that she wishes she'd been born far more ordinary, because envy has destroyed everything: her marriage to Ravenclaw, her relationship with Helena, and it earned her disdain from Eoforhild. Godric assures her that it is other people's choice to act on those feelings, and points out that many more people in her life chose not to.

- Helga begins to find love in an unexpected place: Hrognoth. She is delighted when he proposes.

The final season:

- Godric is growing tired, hardened by the loss of so much and many. He wonders if his time as a Hogwarts Head is coming to a close. Bronwyn is fine with staying, loving Hogwarts immensely, but notes her husband's growing weariness.

- Rowena discovers that non-wizards (including the families of many students) are dying by the thousands of a strange plague. She attempts to find a magical cure, but it backfires, and she realizes she is in trouble.

- Helga and Hrognoth marry on the edges of what will become Hogsmeade.

- When Rowena realizes that she has a slower moving, magical version of the plague, she realizes only one person will be able to find her daughter, because he never failed to pursue her before: Balvard. She sends Balvard to Albania, where she suspects Helena is hiding.

- Artair resents that his mother is fixated on his sister, and that of all people, she chose Balvard.

- We find Helena living in a cottage. She is not pleased to find Balvard there, and will not listen to him when he tries to explain. He kills her, and then himself.

- Helena returns immediately to Hogwarts as a ghost, followed by Balvard. The moment Rowena sees that her daughter is a ghost, her heart stops. Helena realizes that she is a ghost because she should never have left, and does not think she will ever forgive herself.

- Godric lets Helena stay, but is clearly displeased with her. He lets ghost!Balvard stay as well, but more as punishment than as an act of mercy.

- Helga feels sick, and initially believes that it is grief. Then she discovers that she is pregnant.

- Upon hearing the news, Godric realizes that his time at Hogwarts is done. He has new pursuits: he wants to rebuild the village where so many fell, calling it Godric's Hollow.

Helga is sad to see him go, but Godric asks her not to be. He says she has always been the heart of Hogwarts, and it is her destiny to see it through. He knows she will do great things.

The show closes with Helga and Helena watching Godric leave, their backs to the castle.

For me, it's best expressed in memes and .gifs.

Primarily refers to  Harry Potter fandom, but it applies to others as well. (Sidenote: I did "write" a love video of sorts a few years ago just for the Harry Potter  fandom.)

Movie

[personal profile] tediousandbrief yoinked this from thefridayfive on LJ, and I'm yoinking it from him in turn!

1. Have you ever had a movie both totally captivate and complete confuse you? Yes, Nothing But Trouble, although I barely remember it now.  From what I do vaguely remember, this couple gets lost and ends up at a guy's house. He says they can stay, but he hates bankers, so the characters stay. Then I think he finds out the other guy really was a banker. The movie ends with them sliding out of the house. On a slide. With a bunch of other people/captives. (Or something. This had to have been about twenty years ago.)

2. When watching a movie, do you prefer things all laid out or to have to 'hunt for your own clues' along the way? I'm fairly neutral, although sometimes one or the other works best for certain movies.

3. Do you want an ultimate ending to your movie or do you prefer to have it open for conjecture and discussion. Can I have a bit of both? I prefer for the ending to be fairly tied together, but with some loose knots that allow for discussion. However, I think open endings can work well.  I also expect short films to be more open ended - most of the ones I've seen have open endings, so I think that's pretty normal.

4. Do you talk during a movie (preferably one in your home, not in the theatre)? Sometimes I will, but only to add to the movie, and I try not to get carried away.

5. Have you ever seen a blockbuster movie and not get what was so great about it?  Bridesmaids, maybe? But less for being a blockbuster (I don't think it was) or for not seeing why people liked it, and more not getting what people said about it. It wasn't the feminist female buddy comedy I was expecting. Actually, the female "buddies" in the film were pretty terrible. When Annie calls the bride on the verge of a breakdown, and the bride never calls back, then later says she was just too busy - that's not friendship to me. The only real friendship in the film starts brewing in the end. It felt less like a buddy comedy and more like a movie about two friends growing away from one another. Which totally has its own merits, because that does happen and sometimes you just have to accept your friendship for what it is (and isn't), but...

I dunno, it's like if a romance movie ended with the lead "couple" deciding just to be friends. Not necessarily a bad film, just not at all how it was advertised.

(Also, I want a female buddy film that's actually positive toward female friendships!)

I've seen this friending meme before, and I thought I'd try it. I realize doing it right before a holiday weekend in several countries is a gamble, so if this attempt doesn't go anywhere (or very far), I may try it again. I'm posting this on both Dreamwidth and Livejournal. (Note: If you use both and are friends with me on both sites, you CAN post at both, or you can just say "and also on DW/Livejournal.")

The idea is simple: Rather than doing a friending meme where you post all of these details about yourself, simply post in the comments saying "I'm in" or "I'm playing" or "Bueller? Bueller?" if you so desire. Then add other people who've commented.

Also, don't forget to pimp this in your own journal. Now go make some friends!
