Okay, I don't think I can say anything else without a CUT FOR MASSIVE SPOILERS for Crimes of Grindlewald. The tl;dr is that I actually didn't hate the movie. In fact, there were parts I really liked! It's just that... none of those parts involved the main cast.

So, here we go.Read more... )

From my blog prompts. Feel free to steal some of these, guys! I'd love to see other people's answers. :) I have short responses again, so I will combine them.

Write about something you liked when you were younger, but just don't get anymore.

I remember loving the movie musical Across the Universe in college. Then I watched it again a few years ago, and thought it was terrible. Not really sure what the difference was. I wonder if in college, I just liked the DOWN WITH THE MAN vibe?

What is your stance on spoilers?

I think it's a paradox where people either aren't cautious enough, or are so overly cautious it inhibits discussion. I was listening to recaps for a show I like, and they tried so hard to discuss the show without spoiling anything. To give them credit, they did handle it really well, but so many things could have been brought up and explored if they weren't so resistant to any mention of future episodes. I've also seen it be an issue on fan communities, when people get upset about spoilers for books or for series finales that have been out for ages. I just feel that at some point, new fans have to realize that looking up their favorite show/movie/book on websites intended for discussion or listening to podcasts may mean spoilers. I say this as someone who frequently does that very thing. I came so close to being spoiled for the first season finale of The Good Place because of something I read on TV Tropes, but fortunately out of context it didn't make that much sense, so I just shrugged it off. It was my responsibility, though, not the site's responsibility.

That being said, there's also not being cautious enough. If you're not in a discussion place, at least warn for spoilers. If you're posting a review of a book or series finale, use SPOILERS in the heading as well as before the cut, especially in case the cut doesn't work. (That has happened to me.)

So, you know, that's my stance. Be respectful, but at the same time, let discussion places be discussion places.

[personal profile] tediousandbrief yoinked this from thefridayfive on LJ, and I'm yoinking it from him in turn!

1. Have you ever had a movie both totally captivate and complete confuse you? Yes, Nothing But Trouble, although I barely remember it now.  From what I do vaguely remember, this couple gets lost and ends up at a guy's house. He says they can stay, but he hates bankers, so the characters stay. Then I think he finds out the other guy really was a banker. The movie ends with them sliding out of the house. On a slide. With a bunch of other people/captives. (Or something. This had to have been about twenty years ago.)

2. When watching a movie, do you prefer things all laid out or to have to 'hunt for your own clues' along the way? I'm fairly neutral, although sometimes one or the other works best for certain movies.

3. Do you want an ultimate ending to your movie or do you prefer to have it open for conjecture and discussion. Can I have a bit of both? I prefer for the ending to be fairly tied together, but with some loose knots that allow for discussion. However, I think open endings can work well.  I also expect short films to be more open ended - most of the ones I've seen have open endings, so I think that's pretty normal.

4. Do you talk during a movie (preferably one in your home, not in the theatre)? Sometimes I will, but only to add to the movie, and I try not to get carried away.

5. Have you ever seen a blockbuster movie and not get what was so great about it?  Bridesmaids, maybe? But less for being a blockbuster (I don't think it was) or for not seeing why people liked it, and more not getting what people said about it. It wasn't the feminist female buddy comedy I was expecting. Actually, the female "buddies" in the film were pretty terrible. When Annie calls the bride on the verge of a breakdown, and the bride never calls back, then later says she was just too busy - that's not friendship to me. The only real friendship in the film starts brewing in the end. It felt less like a buddy comedy and more like a movie about two friends growing away from one another. Which totally has its own merits, because that does happen and sometimes you just have to accept your friendship for what it is (and isn't), but...

I dunno, it's like if a romance movie ended with the lead "couple" deciding just to be friends. Not necessarily a bad film, just not at all how it was advertised.

(Also, I want a female buddy film that's actually positive toward female friendships!)

So I saw Jack the Giant Slayer, and upon Wikipedia am disappointed to find it may not have been intended to be a parody or at the very least, an intentional tropefest. I was willing to give it that.
