As this is a public post, I am keeping things pretty general. For all intents and purposes, I will call my school MGCC - My Greendale Community College. Spoilers for all six seasons, probably? But mostly the first three.

Ahh, Dawn. Dawn Dawn Dawn.
The short answer is that no, I don't think Dawn is the worst. But I can see where her execution would bother many fans - especially those who'd seen the show from the beginning. I'm a potential (heh) odd one out as I saw the show years after its run, and was fully spoiled for Dawn's appearance. Yet I've also heard from fans who were also spoiled that they didn't like Dawn either, and some fans who watched from the beginning loved her.

Buffy Thoughts (Public Post)
Apr. 26th, 2019 01:56 pmSun: Whee! I'm out!
Clouds: Nope.
Sun: Bitch?
Clouds: Yeaah... I thought so.
And it's all very 2000s. :P Meanwhile, my willingness to leave the house depends on the sun staying out, although I actually have to leave to do some shopping, so I don't have much choice. But I'd rather not leave in the rain, is all I'm saying.
So while I'm here rooting for the sun, how about some Buffy stuff? I've been rewatching Buffy via a podcast (so really not rewatching, just listening to recaps and watching a few episodes that I don't remember as well), so it's been on my mind. I sadly can't find any Buffy memes, so I am pulling from Quora and other places (maybe, haven't gotten that far yet).
SPOILERS for both BtVS and Angel, although I talk about Angel less. However, what do I say pretty much spoils everything. :P

Quick summary of post: I discuss the problem with Very Special Episodes, and how Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (among other shows) got it right.

I think I found where fandom meta went
Jun. 22nd, 2018 10:51 amHowever, I realized something: there actually still is a lot of fandom meta. It's just not in written form.

Actual song: The Schuyler Sisters.
(Sorry for the weird cut placement, it was the only way it would work. The ONE thing I miss about LJ is how much easier their text is now. Step up your game, DW!)
When we meet Gabriel Tam in a flashback (with Zac Efron playing young Simon), he seems like a strict, but not unloving father. We don't see Regan Tam with her kids when they're young, although we do see her in a flashback that's closer to when the events of Firefly take place.
If you recall, Simon tries to tell them that something is wrong with River. He uses her letters as an example, saying how she talked about parties they went to that, in reality, never happened. Her parents deny it, and when Simon gets into trouble for snooping, he gets a stern warning.
This begs the question: What did the Tams know?

Fandom Wishlist
Jan. 4th, 2018 03:44 pmFandom Snowflake asked for a fandom wishlist. So, here's one!
1. META. I miss meta so much. You can either link me to posts you've written or read (please try linking to posts where commenting is optional, participation is half the fun), write something now and link to it.
Also, non-fandom specific meta works as well!
2. Missing moment/backstory/what-if fic. I'm also pen to fics that explore various characters. I prefer canon pairings, but can do non-canon if it's part of said exploration.
3. Fanvids. (Not to be confused with fanmixes. Nothing against them, just not quite what I'm looking for!)
Going to make this entry public so that others can participate, if they wish! And please, even if you're not on my flist, feel free to link to something you've already written or created.
ONE CAVEAT: Nothing dealing with serious illness, please. Just went through some bad things, so.
Fandoms:
- Firefly
- Buffy
- Harry Potter
- Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
- Parks and Recreation
- Mad Men
And any you know I'm in that I didn't think of.
I went back in time to 2003, and interviewed a Harry Potter fan, known as Fan of Fandoms Past (FFP).Last time I did this, it was to recap PoA.
(Quick non-meta note: FFP is basically a parody of teenage Harry Potter fans in 2003. Particularly Marauder fans. Particularly the ones I was friends with. And myself.)

(Public entry, as a heads up.)
I keep meaning to post about this. There are major spoilers for the last episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, although that's not the primary focus of this entry. Mostly it's about internet culture and how it deals with crises, personal problems, and grief.

1. Have you ever had a movie both totally captivate and complete confuse you? Yes, Nothing But Trouble, although I barely remember it now. From what I do vaguely remember, this couple gets lost and ends up at a guy's house. He says they can stay, but he hates bankers, so the characters stay. Then I think he finds out the other guy really was a banker. The movie ends with them sliding out of the house. On a slide. With a bunch of other people/captives. (Or something. This had to have been about twenty years ago.)
2. When watching a movie, do you prefer things all laid out or to have to 'hunt for your own clues' along the way? I'm fairly neutral, although sometimes one or the other works best for certain movies.
3. Do you want an ultimate ending to your movie or do you prefer to have it open for conjecture and discussion. Can I have a bit of both? I prefer for the ending to be fairly tied together, but with some loose knots that allow for discussion. However, I think open endings can work well. I also expect short films to be more open ended - most of the ones I've seen have open endings, so I think that's pretty normal.
4. Do you talk during a movie (preferably one in your home, not in the theatre)? Sometimes I will, but only to add to the movie, and I try not to get carried away.
5. Have you ever seen a blockbuster movie and not get what was so great about it? Bridesmaids, maybe? But less for being a blockbuster (I don't think it was) or for not seeing why people liked it, and more not getting what people said about it. It wasn't the feminist female buddy comedy I was expecting. Actually, the female "buddies" in the film were pretty terrible. When Annie calls the bride on the verge of a breakdown, and the bride never calls back, then later says she was just too busy - that's not friendship to me. The only real friendship in the film starts brewing in the end. It felt less like a buddy comedy and more like a movie about two friends growing away from one another. Which totally has its own merits, because that does happen and sometimes you just have to accept your friendship for what it is (and isn't), but...
I dunno, it's like if a romance movie ended with the lead "couple" deciding just to be friends. Not necessarily a bad film, just not at all how it was advertised.
(Also, I want a female buddy film that's actually positive toward female friendships!)

Show Review: GLOW
Sep. 26th, 2017 07:22 pmIf you don't know, GLOW takes place in the 1980's, and is based on an actual TV show named GLOW. I'm not sure if this is intentional, but there is definitely also a 1980's/90's "you can do it" movie vibe. You know, someone who doesn't initially get what he or she is getting into, a leader who is a bit of a hot mess, and there's always at least one character whose family/boyfriend/whoever doesn't want him or her to do The Thing. Yup, yup, and yup. But these aren't clichés - if it's intentional, it adds to the flavor, and if it was unintentional, it still worked for the plot.
The characters are still growing into place, just as their in-show characters are. Debbie and Cherry are the most readily sympathetic; especially Debbie. I don't think Ruth is as unsympathetic as it seems some fans feel she is, although the fact that she's played by Allison Brie might help, since it's hard to be too upset with Trudy and Annie. ;) Seriously though, while she did some pretty horrible things in the first episode, I felt the show did a good job of making her face the consequences, as well as try to be the "real" Ruth. Sam, meanwhile, is definitely the hot mess leader who can be pretty horrible, but he will also surprise you.
The more minor characters still need work, and to some extent, the major ones could use a bit of touching up too. However, I think this can be rectified with a second season.
As someone who was born in the 80's, I felt the show did a good job of balancing between "WE ARE WRITING ABOUT A TIME" and just letting things seem normal. I remember when the first season of Mad Men had in-jokes about smoking and "difficult technology", something that fortunately subsided in later seasons. The show makes references to current events and pop culture (Back to the Future is a minor plot point!), but it doesn't hit you over the head with the fact that this is the 1980's. It just is.
Overall, I like GLOW. I think it needs some fine tuning, but I'm optimistic about future seasons.
(One warning, though - if miscarriage is a trigger, there's a rather gruesome fake miscarriage scene in the second episode.)
Since some of my friends are still reading the books, I'm putting the rest of this under a cut.

Interviews and Stupid/Awkward Questions

Making Plans: Hogwarts House Style
Jun. 2nd, 2017 12:37 pmGryffindor: Let's do a different place. I heard people in charge of that one publicly endorsed something terrible.
Slytherin: Some of us live closer to Mark's Steakhouse. Let's go there.
Ravenclaw: We should either go later or earlier if we want to avoid a long wait.
Hufflepuff: I'll be there!
Master of None
May. 17th, 2017 08:25 amSo I watched the second season of Master of None, and have thoughts both on that and Aziz Ansari's saying that he doesn't want a third season until he's in a different place in his life.
(This post is 100% spoilery.)
