This could be your first fandom, your first fandom friend, the first fanwork you created, the first fanwork you interacted with... The options are endless! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Hm.
Fandom nonsense under the cut. I've made it a combination of fandom specific and more general "fan" stuff, to even out the playing field a little. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts!
ETA: Sorry the cut's weird, guys. There actually is a full entry under here, I just don't want to have to repost this all over again, so I'm not tinkering too much.
First fandom: Technically my fandom involvement began in elementary school, when my friends and I would talk about our favorite books and play make-believe stories based on them. But my first major online fandom wouldn't be until high school.
First fanwork you created: A very bad fic for my first "major" fandom, based on Romeo and Juliet. Guess what we were reading in 9th grade English?
First fanwork you interacted with: I'm not really sure. I read a lot of fic and saw a lot of fanart at once. I definitely discovered Cassandra Claire (now "Clare") early on.
First fandom friend: I made a lot of friends in chatrooms for my first major fandom.
Here are a few of my own. Feel free to steal! Thought they could be fun. I ended up having to simplify the lists or I'd have been here all day.
First artist you remember listening to: Either Bette Midler or Whitney Houston.
First niche hobby/interest: I went through a very brief rock collecting phase, around the same time as my astrology phase.
First favorite band or artist: Sarah Mclachlan.
First celebrity crush: Jason Mraz.
First time meeting a celebrity or public figure: Never have.
First unpopular opinion (that you can easily recall): In general, I liked Twister. In fandom, I didn't like a character a lot of people in my fandom adored. TBH, I can actually see it now.
First news-related obsession: Heaven's Gate had me obsessed with cults for a short period of time.
First convention: Don't do conventions,* but leaving this here for those of you who do.
*I hate crowds.
First Star Wars movie: Star Wars: A New Hope. But I didn't see any other movies from the original trilogy until I'd seen all of the prequels.
Okay, I gotta stop somewhere, guys. Like I said, feel free to snag, and/or add your own!

Date: 2025-01-19 06:47 pm (UTC)It's less common on AO3, but I remember ff.net was full of fic that were written for some flavour of class assignment. I was always charmed.

Listen, a lot of us grew up with the Cosbys. We had no way of knowing what would happen later. <3
And I looooove Twister! I think you've seen my post on it already, but yeah, I'm amazed this is an "un"popular opinion. It's a great movie! Still one of my favorites.

Date: 2025-01-20 11:31 am (UTC)Yeah, I think she dropped the "I" to separate herself from her fandom identity, while still appealing to her fans. But I don't know for sure.

I haven't seen it in a while, but I wonder if it's in part because it's not particularly edgy, as far as disaster films go? You might be the one who pointed that out. I should rewatch it (and re-read your entry about it).

Date: 2025-01-20 12:13 pm (UTC)It's buried in one of my Van Halen posts, since they were on the soundtrack. Link!
You did read it last time, but we didn't talk about it's lack of edginess.

Date: 2025-01-20 01:21 pm (UTC)But I do think it might be a little "sweet" for people who want more "rocks falls, everyone dies" disaster films. On the other hand, I've seen a handful of disaster films (if not that many) and a lot of them often still have a similar storyline, where someone is in the middle of a reconciliation while disaster strikes, etc. There's just often a little more blood and gore, and less found family. I don't know.

Date: 2025-01-20 04:13 am (UTC)Fun story in regards to Heaven's Gate. I was taking a class called Sociology of Religious Cults when that happened, and the professor who taught the class was the only person who had infiltrated the cult and most of what we know about them from an insiders perspective immediately after came from him. It was wild to feel some weird connection to it all.

Date: 2025-01-20 05:47 am (UTC)Ha, now I'm curious -- was it a fix-it AU? Fic focusing on secondary characters?

Date: 2025-01-20 05:04 pm (UTC)I don't think you need to be sorry for Cosby show being your first remembered show. Cosby should be sorry for what he did. People don't need to be sorry for watching a really good family show.

Date: 2025-02-03 12:01 pm (UTC)I'd also argue there are probably lots of bad people who made things we love that we just don't know about. I'm not saying that means you shouldn't bother being mindful, I'm just saying, sometimes bad people make or participate in good things, and it's not something we need to apologize for.

Date: 2025-01-20 09:07 pm (UTC)And yeah, those of us who watched The Cosby Show or listened to/watched some of his old stand-up before everything came out wouldn't have had a clue.
